About us
The Mitmachbox comes from demokratie.today. We set up and run participation platforms for municipalities – based on the open source software Consul, which we have been developing in our own edition for five years.
What we do
We look after cities, districts, municipalities and civic initiatives in day-to-day operation – from the large city to the small municipality. We take on setup, operation, briefing and support – and build the pieces a process is still missing. Everything we host runs on servers in Germany.
Why the Mitmachbox exists
Online participation reliably reaches the people who take part anyway. Anyone without time for an evening session, anyone unwilling to sign up, anyone who does not search online at all drops out. The box turns that around: it stands where people already are, asks a question and takes the answer at the push of a button. No sign-up, no personal data.
The box does not replace the platform. It is an additional route within the same process – the answers from the street end up in the same evaluation as the contributions from home.
How we work
You talk to the people who also build and run the thing. There is no sales layer between you and the technology. Boards and boxes are rented, not bought; maintenance, replacement and battery changes are part of the rent.
An outside assessment
The OECD names demokratie.today in its study “Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Citizen Participation” (2026) – as an example of how an AI assistant helps administrations set up participation processes. It is the only example there for the administration side.
